From Overwhelmed to Empowered: How I Transformed My Sensitivity into a Superpower

When I was a child, no one talked about being an empath or a highly sensitive person (HSP). I didn’t know why certain clothes felt unbearable or why I always ended up in the nurse’s office at school.As a child, I found myself spending a lot of time in the nurse’s office. Looking back, I now realize that my headaches weren’t always mine—they were Jon’s. The stomach aches? Sara’s. I was absorbing the emotions and pain of those around me without even knowing it. But at the time, I was just labeled as “dramatic.” Once I was away from the person who was in pain or distress, I would suddenly feel better. The headaches, the stomach aches, the fatigue—they would all ease when I was away from the energy of the person causing them. But I didn’t understand why this was happening, and neither did anyone else.


The Struggles of an Unaware Empath

I wasn’t taught to have boundaries. I was taught to be nice, to be pleasing, to ignore my gut feelings, and to just keep going. The truth was—I didn’t know where I ended and someone else began. I assumed everyone felt the way I did—intensely.


I became a magnet for people’s problems. Strangers would spill their life stories in the grocery store. Friends would pour out their pain and then bounce away feeling lighter—while I felt completely drained. I didn’t know how to protect myself from absorbing their energy.


By high school, my body had enough. I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. My energy field had been so overwhelmed for so long that I could no longer tell what was me and what was someone else’s stress. I had felt unsafe in my body for so long from the onslaught of everyone's feelings that my body had activated my immune system into overprotecting me and my body fighting itself. I hated my body for hurting all the time. I felt like my sensitivity was a curse.

But now I know better.


From Sensitivity to Strength

I like to think of myself as the canary in the coal mine. Miners used to bring canaries into caves as an early warning system—if the air became toxic, the canary would sense it before the men. I am that canary. I am sensitive to energy, and instead of seeing it as a weakness, I now see it as a gift.

Through energy clearing, Qi Gong, Reiki, and strong energetic boundaries, I have transformed my sensitivity into a superpower. I have learned how to clear, protect, and strengthen my energy so that I no longer absorb what isn’t mine.


For the first time in my life, I know what is me and what is not me. I no longer carry the weight of other people’s pain. Instead, I trust that they are strong enough to handle their own emotions—and I use my sensitivity to guide, support, and heal in a way that doesn’t deplete me.

How to move from Overwhelmed to Empowered.

Here are some simple things that you can try to clear and strengthen you energy field.

  • Shaking - this Qi Gong move is so simple and effective. Bounce in your legs and let your arms hang next to your body and you shake in a downward fashion. Be sure to let the wrists shake too.  You can even try tapping your heals on the ground as you shake to let the frequency clear out old energy. Breath deep and exhale making the Haaaaa sound to clear emotional energy.

  • Next close your eyes and imagine a blue waterfall or rain cleansing your energy field 3-5 feet behind you, to the sides and in front of you. Breathe deep and slowly as you allow anything that isn't you to be washed away.

  • Now, strengthen your field by massaging the inside of your wrist. Lay three fingers on your wrist to find the point and rub in circles with firm pressure between the 2 tendons. This is pericardium 6 on your meridian line and is responsible for your Wei Qi - the protective bubble around you. Imagine a golden bubble of light surrounding you so that others energy can be perceived without being absorbed.

I use these techniques every week to help me feel my best!


Now, here is where the superpower part comes in! With a clean energy field, you can use your energy to "know" or sense how others are feeling, to anticipate what is coming and to respond with more ease. By know what is yours and what isn't, you can let people keep their problems and still help them feel better as they talk to you.


By your very nature as an empath, people will enjoy being in your company. Your energy field will feel warm and inviting. By having a regular clearing practice, you can also enjoy others when you want without the overwhelm.
